Coffee Time With Jesus

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1.

My six-month-old son has a habit of stirring in his sleep at 4:50am most mornings. He doesn’t wake up, but he makes just enough noise (I’m a light sleeper) to alert me to rise. I’m a morning person by nature and when my eyes open I’m awake; even if I want to drift back to slumber, I usually can’t because of the excitement I feel that it’s morning.

It’s almost a gift that Levi wakes me up so early because I hate the sound of an alarm.

Are there any other morning people reading this? Or, am I completely not relatable to some night owls right now?

If your life is dry and parched like a desert, His presence will give you the refreshing you need.

One reason I love the breaking of dawn is spending time with the Lord—I get butterflies in my stomach at the thought of communing with my Savior. For years I have affectionately called my morning devotion, “Coffee time with Jesus.” I love sitting in my chair and saying, “Good morning, Jesus.” It may sound simple, or even silly, but as soon as I say that, I feel the most beautiful presence of God and I know, even in the darkness with my messy topknot, He is there.

We all have excuses of why we are are too busy. I can use the excuse of not spending time with the Lord to having two kids, two-years-old and under. But, before I had kids, I was in Grad school, working full-time, on several ministry teams at my church, planning a wedding—you get the idea. I was busy, and I know you are too. We are overwhelmed with life’s demands; whether you are married or single, employed or a stay-at-home-mom, in school or out of school, young or old.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMETHING WARRING FOR OUR TIME, BUT IT IS UP TO YOU AND ME TO ACTIVELY PRIORITIZE TO MAKE TIME FOR GOD, OR THE DAY WILL PASS WITHOUT WHAT WE NEED MOST; COMMUNION WITH OUR LORD.

I am not trying to force you to become a morning person (even though it’s pretty awesome), and I’m not saying the only time you can hear God’s voice is at 5am, but I am encouraging you to spend time with Him everyday. Nothing is more important than our relationship with God. Today, look over the pattern of your day and take an honest assessment of where you spend your time and where you waste time. Spending quality time with God is never wasted time; it will be the best part of your day.

Prayer: Lord, I desire to draw closer to You than ever before. I want to experience Your presence in the dawn, or in the midnight hour. Wherever I go throughout my day, You are there. You are everywhere present and nowhere absent, so I pray You will nudge me when I become distracted with other things, so I don’t go a day without communing with You. I love you, Lord.
