God is All Consuming

Deuteronomy 4:24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. NKJV

Devotional: As a high school senior I experienced a tragedy and desperately needed reassurance that God cared about me. My brother was suddenly taken by a life of drugs, alcohol, and sin. In my broken state I found complete comfort and healing from God. Unfortunately, God sometimes has to bring us to a point of surrender so that He may form us in His image. Scripture tells us that God is a consuming fire, which means even if we don’t allow His presence to completely consume us, He is still all powerful. In the same verse we are told that He is a jealous God. When we show more attention to worldly things than we show to Him, He will stop the flow of blessings on us. My life was transformed the day I lost someone so close to me, and I learned that my complete being needed to be consumed every day with the presence of God. There is nothing in this world that can compare to the strength God gives, the love He provides, or the peace that passes all understanding.

Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank You for saturating every aspect of my life, even in the circumstances I don’t understand. It is in those times of brokenness that I am brought to a point of complete surrender and Your presence is like a sweet perfume comforting my spirit. I pray that You keep my eyes focused on You even when I am in a valley. I will forever praise You in the storm.
